Cows, the backbone of India’s agrarian economy, have been the most neglected in recent times.Vishwa Mangal Gou Gram Yatra is the largest ever cow-protection movement in India.The Vishwa Mangal Gou Gram yatra is inspired by Poojya Shri Raghaveshwara Bharathi Swamiji, the Shankaracharya of the Ramachandrapura Math in Karnataka, and has the blessings of almost all of the revered saints of the country."Kamadugha" movement under the leadership and guidance of Poojya Jagadguru Shankaracharya Shree Raghaveshwara Bharathi Swamiji of Shree Ramachandrapura Math has four causes – protection of Indian breeds of cow, their prosperity, research on them, and their welfare. Amritadhara Gouloka in Hosanagar is protecting and prospering 30 out of the 33 remaining breeds of Indian cows. Plan includes establishing 108 such centres in the country
Shree Ramachandrapura Math has procured 24 rare Indian breed cattle such as Amrithmahal, Baragur, Dangi, Deoni, Gaoloa, Gir, Hallikaru, Hariana, Jawari, Kangayam, Kankrej, Kasaragod, Khilari, Krishna, Malavi, Malenadu Gidda, Nagori, Nimari, Ongole, Rati, Sahiwal, Sindhi, Tharparker, Umblachery, Vechur and rears them in eco friendly goshalas. Amruthadhara goshala at Hosanagara, the largest centre of native cattle in India, attracts people from different parts of the world. Research and development on different aspects of cattle breeding, rearing and utilisation of cow products is undertaken.Distribution of native breed cows to farmers is another measure.
It has established Gavya Chikithsa Kendras, and Ayurvedic nature cure centres which provide treatment to ailments like cancer and arthritis.This Goushala has more than 400 cows.

Shree Raghaveshwara Bharathi Swamji , of Shree Ramachandrapura mutt has dedicated himself to the preservation of the indigenous breeds of Indian cows. He had taken up protection of the indigenous cow breeds as his mission through a programme called "Kamadugha". On 22 April 2007, he lead and organized nine day long Vishwa Go-Sammelan (World Cow Conference), more than 300 religious leaders and more than half a million people had participated in the conference.
The urgent call for the protection and preservation of Indian Cow Breed ( Bos Indicos ) has been his primary activity in the very recent years. Of total 70 breeds recognised in India, only around 35 breeds exist today, and all of them can be found in matha.Projects are on to start 108 goushalas, of which few are already started in different parts of INDIA. In fact, this work is highly noted, as so far no institutions in India, govt or NGO's, had started the work. The Mutt has many breeds in its collection. Work is being done to preserve the same for future. Some rare breeds as Amrithmahal, Vechur, which count less than 100 in numbers, are protected here . He has been working stressing the need to promote products other than milk products, as Go-ark, medicines from cow, Doopa, etc.Sri Swamiji has known to have dedicated his life to the cause of Indigenous cows and cow protection. He also lead and inspired the 108 day long (30 September 2009- 17 January 2010 ) 'Vishwa Mangala Gou Grama Yathra' with the support of various saints and hindu organizations like Vishva Hindu Parishad and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh covering whole of India to highlight the importance of preservation and protection of cow with the main demands being to formulate laws to preserve various breeds of Indian cows. It ended with the one of the biggest mass signature campaign signed by over 830 Million People across India calling for the end of cruelty to cow which is then submitted to President of India on 31 January 2010. A 18 member delegation which visited the President of India was led by Shri Raghaveshwara Bharathi swamiji including yoga Guru Baba Ramdev, Shri Pejavara Vishvesha Tirtha Swamiji, many other senior saints and Shankaracharyas, religious leaders from Islam and Christianity, cow scientists, experts, organic farmers and leaders belonging to various organisations of the country.

We are all aware that the cow is considered on par with the Goddess by the people of hindu religion. Cow is worshipped everyday by performing pooja. Many festivals in the temple and functions in the houses are celebrated only after performing Gou-pooja. It helps the human beings in so many ways, Cow's milk and its products give health to the young and the aged people and helps them to lead a healthy life. The sacred ash made by cow dung is given to devotees in the temples as Vibuthi and this Vibuthi prevents diseases like cold and severe headache. The urine and the cow dung are natural fertiliser for agricultural land.
Such a worshipable cows are mercilessly sent to slaughter houses, when they are aged or while they attain the non-productive age. In the slaughter houses, the sacred cows are killed in a barbaric and cruel manner for their flesh, skin and bones. It is a great sin and against the basic tenets of the Vedas and sacred scripts on Hinduism.
In order to prevent this sinful act of killing the cows or sending the cows to slaughter houses, a few state governments in India have already enacted laws prohibiting it. But, unfortunately, the killing of the sacred cows is going on unabatedly in many parts of India without minding the sentiments of the Hindus and cruelty involved in it.
